Cheek Augmentation with Fat or Implant

The main aim of cheek augmentation is to add lift or volume to the cheeks. Cheeks can sag or can lose volume with age, and some people are bothered by it. There are other groups of people who don’t have the desired volume of the cheeks, which are thin or flat.

Cheek augmentation is done mainly by two methods – fat grafting or solid cheek implants. Cheek augmentation through fat grafting is achieved by injecting the fat into the cheeks. Using fat as a filler has its own advantage as there is no risk of the body rejecting the substance.

Cheek augmentation through implants is achieved by a range of plastic surgery techniques. The procedure is the best for people having asymmetrical facial structures and who have experienced trauma in the midfacial area.

Ideal Candidate

The procedure is popular among both genders who don’t like their flat and sunken cheeks. A person who wants to have plumper and well-defined cheeks may be a good candidate. The process is suitable for a person having sunken cheeks due to loss of cheek tissues, usually due to hereditary and aging. A person who has lost cheek tissue in trauma is also a right candidate for the procedure.

Patients planning to undergo the procedure should be in good health and have stable weight. If there are any dental or sinus issues, they should be properly treated before the surgery. A patient undergoing the procedure should have realistic expectations from the procedure.

Procedure

For the fat transfer, a patient needs to undergo liposuction first. Liposuction is commonly performed from the thigh or stomach area. The fat retrieved is cleansed medically and purified before injecting it on the affected site. Once liposuction is complete, the face is prepared for fat grafting. Fat is injected in both the cheeks and the placement and amount will depend on the individual.

Cheek Augmentation using an implant is a surgical procedure, and it’s results are permanent. There are a wide variety of cheek implants available today, but the most commonly used are solid silicone implants. To begin the procedure, the surgeon will draw lines on the patient’s cheeks for proper placement of the implants. The patient is then sedated under local or general anesthesia, and the surgery will start from an incision done on the area pre-decided. From the incision, the surgeon will slip the implant in the pocket of the facial tissue. Once the implant is in place as desired, the surgeon will close the incision with the help of sutures and will cover the area using bandages.

Recovery

Most patients take almost a week off from their work in order to recover. The cheeks may be sore, swollen, and bruised at that time. There may be difficulty in smiling, chewing, and yawning. You will be advised to keep your head and neck elevated all the time for a few days so that the implants don’t shift out of place. Cool compression can be used for swelling.

Known complications

Complications are rare, and a good plastic surgeon can further reduce the chances of complications. The rare complications can be infection, pain, bruising, edema, fat necrosis, and fat calcification. As the cheek augmentation process is surgical, a patient will need to take care of the sutures. There can also be the risk of infection and misplaced implant.

Recent advances

The procedure of cheek augmentation has improved a lot in the last few years. With the advancement in plastic surgery, the procedure has become simpler and less painful for the patients. There is a remarkable improvement in the types of implants available now. The implants used right now are long-lasting and more natural-looking. As a result of advancement and improvement in the procedure, more people are getting interested in getting it done on them.
